It’s Forbidden to Drink Alcohol in Vehicles in Thailand

If you are planning a holiday in Thailand, you should know that it is against the law to drink alcohol in any vehicle. It doesn’t matter if you are the driver or passenger. It’s against the law. If caught you face up to 6 months in prison and/or a fine of up to 10,000 Baht.

The police will have a hard time enforcing this law during the Songhran festivities.
I laughed when my taxi driver in Udon Thani cracked a beer after we embarked. Thankfully it was a short trip.
Does this apply to buses? How about trains?
That would explain why so many people drink it all before they get in the vehicle.
