UPDATE: The Bangkok Shutdown is over. Please click here for the latest updates.

Please read my latest tweets above before asking questions. Also check the map for latest updates on protest sites.

The Bangkok Shutdown is continuing into February now. As long as you stay away from rally sites and large gatherings you will be fine. The main rally sites affecting tourists are at Phathumwan (MBK), Ratchaprasong (Central World), Asoke (Terminal 21) and Sala Daeng (Silom). However, malls at all these locations have skybridge access from skytrain stations. All transport is running in Bangkok and airports are not under threat of closure. Elsewhere in Thailand is safe.

I don’t get paid to help tourists on twitter. If you would like to buy me a beer or make a donation, please use the form in the top left. Also, if you book your hotel on agoda by using this link, I get a small commission. It doesn’t affect your price. Thanks.

Five Intersections and roads they closed from 13 January:
1. Phathumwan (Near MBK & Siam Square)
2. Ratchaprasong (Near Central World)
3. Sala Daeng (Near Lumpini Park & Silom)
4. Asoke Intersection (Near Terminal 21)
5. Chaeng Wattana

Ratchadamnoen Avenue near Government House still has rally sites and is marked as a danger zone on my map.

If you are coming to Bangkok during this time you should be alright, but obviously you might find it difficult to get around during the shutdown. It will also be unpredictable. If this concerns you then maybe you should go to Chiang Mai or Phuket instead. Or at least move to one of the nearby seaside resorts like Pattaya or Hua Hin for a few days if things heat up. Follow me on Twitter @RichardBarrow if you want to learn the full details as and when they are announced by the protest leaders. At the moment, I am spending 100% of my energy and time on reporting on the protests in Bangkok. I’ve quit my regular job to do this.

LATEST UPDATES and FAQ from TWITTER:

  • Protesters at the rally sites Lad Prao & Victory Monument have moved to Lumpini. At the moment it looks like Chaeng Wattana will remain.
  • The most dangerous rally sites are at Ratchadamnoen, Chaeng Wattana & Lumpini in that order. Safest at Asoke, Ratchaprasong & Phathumwan.
  • As far as tourists are concerned, everything is open as normal. This includes tourist attractions, shopping malls, trains & airports.
  • Even malls like MBK, Siam Center, Paragon, Terminal 21 & CentralWorld have safe access via skybridges & are now open until later at night.
  • Stay away from rally sites & large gatherings in #Bangkok & you’ll be fine. Visiting them is like crossing the road without looking.

Hey Richard – Thanks for all your help, I’ve been visiting the site everyday! Just sent you a “beer” the other day as a thank you 🙂

I will be in Bangkok in about 10 days, staying at the Erawan Hyatt. I see there was an explosion very close by yesterday. You think I’m safe if I just stick to the sky-bridge and the BRT? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Richard,
Find your blog so informative, thank you! We are arriving 12th march and are spending 2 nights at the sofitel sukhumvit which is just outside of the red zone at asoke on your map. We plan on walking from hotel to soi 11 for nightlife, will this be safe? We are both female and would consider changing hotels if you think would be safer.

    Hi Richard

Many thanks for your constant updates.

I’m staying at Evergreen Place (near Asia Hotel) at the end of March, alone with my 3 young children for a week. I chose the hotel so we could visit MBK and Siam Ocean World and travel to the rest of Bangkok via the Sky Train. I can see on your map its not in the red zone, but will I be able to easily avoid the protest area? I don’t know the area at all.

    Thank you in advance

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for all your messages at Twitter and the great map.

Will be visiting Bangkok together with child mid/end March. I’ve booked at Atlanta Hotel at the end of Sukhumvit Soi 2. This seems not to be a danger zone but seems to be located between two rally sites, with the nearest BTS station (Ploen Chit) close to one of the sites. Is it alright to walk from BTS, or is it rather advisable to use taxis directly from/to hotel, considering that the highly sad fatalities on Sunday did not happen exactly on a rally site either (if I’ve understood correctly)?

    Thanks in advance!

Me and 2 friends are starting our backpacking trip in Asia in Bangkok on the 24th March (month away, so hopefully the troubles may have calmed down?), and are planning on staying around Khao San Road for 4 nights, before heading north.

Hi Richard! My friend and I are staying at the Nantra 39 Sukhumvit Hotel, which looked kind of close to some protests and red flag areas! Can you tell me if we should be worried, or book another place? We’re flying in on the 4th of March and staying for 3 days. Thank you so so much, and we booked through agoda, so yay for you!

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for the updates – very good. We are flying onto BKK on Friday (28th Feb) and staying at Siam@Siam. We were looking at going to MBK (via skywalk) and Chatuchak Market by BTS. Do you know of any probs around that area (realise it is on the edge of a Protest zone

It’s a major rally site all around MBK. Not safe to be on ground level. You will have to walk through the crowd to get to the BTS.

    Hi Richard

Thank you for much for being our eyes and ears in Bangkok. It’s truly admirable.

I will be heading to bangkok during 15-20 March with my child who is 12 years old. We have booked Siam kempinski which is located beside Siam paragon. Will it be safe to stay there? Any taxi access? Is siam paragon/ discovery centre safe?

There is a rally site in front of Siam Paragon as you will see on the map. It might be possible to have taxi access but no guarantees.

Hi Richard, thanks so much for your active posting on this topic. We are booked at the Oriental Residences on Wireless Road from 8-12 March and noticed it’s not too far from some of the protest sites you highlighted. Is it possible to be based there and still see the major sites while avoiding the protests or are we sure to run into them?

Also we are first time Bangkok visitors so strongly thinking about taking your advice to just go to Phuket or elsewhere instead given your advice on Twitter. We have to go through Bangkok anyway so thinking of just staying at an airport hotel when we return before taking off again. Does that sound too conservative?
    Thank you!

P.S. Have bought you a beer on your website 🙂

            Hi

We have just got back from hotel muse. We did see a lot of traffic one day which slowed return back to the hotel but there is full access to the hotel for taxi’s. I would advise extra time to get back to the airport.

The hotel itself is functioning as normal and is a fair way away from one of the pedestrian entrances to the protest sites.

If you are walking anywhere I would advise to go to one of the nearest bts stations (2 are accessible without going through a protest site) and travel from there or via taxi.
