Papaya Salad with Horse Crap

It took me a little while to work out this menu item. Horse crap? How did they go from Som Tum with crab to this? Then I realised “crap” was really “crab”. But why “horse crap”? Well this comes from the kind of crab. In Thai it’s “pu maa” (ปูม้า) which they translated literally as “horse crab”. But really, the English name for this crab is “blue crab”. So, the proper description should be “Papaya salad with fresh blue crab” (ส้มตำปูม้า). I’m sure there are many more examples of menu mistakes out there, but this is one of the best.
