App for Checking Air Quality in Thailand

It’s now that time of year when farmers in Northern Thailand set fires which cause thick choking smog. In downtown Chiang Mai the haze gets so bad that you often cannot see Doi Suthep at this time of year. Flights into Northern cities are also often cancelled or diverted due to the smog. The above screenshot is the reading for Chiang Rai this morning compared to where I am in Phuket. The PM10 reading is the worry as it shows how many tiny dust particles that are in the air. Not healthy at all this week in Northern Thailand.

This app is called “Air4Thai” and is available for both iOS and Android. However, I hear that the latter version doesn’t update. On my iPhone, I saw the first update at 7am and I see now that the update has changed to 8am. On the map of Thailand you can see where the best air quality is today by looking for the blue badges. Yellow & Orange is unhealthy. You can also see a chart for readings over the last seven days. This app might be useful for people planning a holiday in Thailand.

To be fair, this smog also blows in from nearby Myanmar.
