My Experience of doing a “Reboot” with Lifestyle Juicery in Bangkok

Lifestyle Juicery

My life changed just over two years ago when I started juicing for the first time. I had been ill a lot and friends had suggested that by juicing vegetables and fruit I would feel much better. Around the same time I watched the excellent documentary Fat Sick and Nearly Dead which was an inspiration to me for doing a “reboot” of my body. I bought a cheap juicer to start with as I wan’t sure if this was just a passing fad. I experimented with a number of different recipes until I was ready to do the reboot, which is sometimes called a “juice detox”. I aimed for seven days of only consuming juices, but ended up doing ten days. I felt so much better and healthier during and after the reboot that I now juice regularly and also do a reboot at least twice a year. I also went ahead and bought the more expensive slow juicer. Since I started two years ago, I have never once been ill.

For people who are too busy to prepare their own juices or don’t want to pay for an expensive juicer that they might not use again, then there are a number of different companies around Thailand that offer a juice cleanse service. One such company is Lifestyle Juicery in Bangkok. I first came across them at the Bangkok Farmers’ Market. Their juice cleanse programs are not cheap, but they do take the hard work out of  doing a reboot yourself. That way you can just concentrate on getting through the program with little effort. I was interested in testing them out, but as I have my own juicers, there didn’t seem to be any point. However, they contacted me the other week saying that they had read my blogs about doing juice reboots (see here) and they wanted me to test out their programs to compare to my own. I couldn’t resist this offer and immediately signed up for their juice cleanse.

Lifestyle Juicery offer a number of different juice cleanse programs. In my opinion you need to do one longer than 2-3 days as it is the first few days which you will find the hardest. You will have withdrawal like symptoms and maybe headaches if you normally drink a lot of coffee. But, once you are over the hump then you will feel much better. The length of their programs are 4 days, 6 days and 10 days. I signed up for the ten day reboot, but the shorter ones are just fine. But, it is important that you do a “pre-cleanse” for a few days beforehand by cutting down on things like processed food, caffeine and other stimulants, sugary food like cakes and pastries, dairy products, and bread and pasta. By doing so you won’t have many withdrawal symptoms and your first three days of the reboot will be so much easier.

So, what happens is that they will deliver the juices to you every two days. It is important to put these in the fridge straight away. You get the choice to get a morning or evening delivery. I chose the latter and so my first delivery came the night before. In one day there are six bottles. So, with one delivery you get 12 bottles altogether. Each bottle has a number on the lid to make sure you drink them in the correct order. They also advise you to start the day with a cup of hot lemon drink. I then drank the first juice at about 8am or so then the rest at roughly 2-3 hour intervals. It is also important that you keep hydrated. I always aim to drink at least four 500ml glasses of water during the day. Even when I’m not thirsty. Though of course this will mean you will need to take frequent trips to the bathroom. At least I had to.

For me, one of the best reasons to do a juice cleanse with Lifestyle Juicery was to see what recipes they had. I tend to stick to my favourites which might not always be the healthiest. I also tend to favour fruits over vegetables which again you shouldn’t really do. So, for those interested, here is what I drank over the last ten days:

  • Pineapple, orange, apple, carrot, parsley & celery
  • Kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, lemon, broccoli & ginger
  • Beetroot, kale, carrot, apple & broccoli
  • Coconut water & cinnamon
  • Kale, spinach, cucumber, apple, lemon, pineapple, basil & ginger
  • Almonds, cashews, wild honey & cinnamon

That is what I had most days. There was one day that they delivered different juices. But, as they didn’t repeat that again I guess it was an experiment or they were out of stock of the other products. Anyway, here are the additional juices I had:

  • Kale, green apple, red apple, Pak choi, lemon, spirulina & cucumber
  • Kale, celery, broccoli, bell pepper, ginger & lemon
  • Carrot, apple & ginger
  • Kale, apple & lemon
  • Cucumber, spinach, broccoli, ginger, lemon, red apple, green apple & kale
  • Pineapple, apple & mint

So, what were the benefits for me and how did I cope? Well, as I have done reboots before, I managed to sail through much of the reboot without really feeling hungry. If I did, then I just drank water. I also had the option to drink some herbal tea if I wanted to have a pick-me-up. Although I wasn’t aiming to lose weight, I managed to drop just under 5 kilos. Which was about what I put on after the big Thanksgiving dinner and all the Christmas and New Year’s parties since. A reboot is a great way to clear the excesses of the festive season. It also reminds you to be thoughtful of what you put in your mouth. Is this food really essential for my wellbeing? Since I started juicing regularly, I hardly ever eat processed or fast food. It is not as if it’s forbidden. It is just that I no longer feel like eating them. I also don’t need coffee any more to stay awake.

I probably won’t use a company like Lifestyle Juicery again as I have my own slow juicer. But, I must admit that the last ten days have been very easy for me. Usually I spend a lot of time during the reboots going shopping, preparing produce, juicing and then clearing up. This time I didn’t have to do any of that. They even delivered to my front door. I felt so lazy! I know some office workers in Bangkok probably don’t have the luxury of free time. Or maybe you don’t want to spend 10,000 Baht on a slow juicer. If so, I highly recommend for you to try a company like Lifestyle Juicery. If then you do feel like you benefit from a juice cleanse like I did, then you might want to consider investing in your own juicer. It would be a bit like trying before you buy. Good luck!

    Richard,
Thanks very much for this write up of your experience. Interesting. We live in Minburi. Is that included in the Bangkok Met area referred to in the ad? If you are not sure, I will contact the company directly.

    Thanks very much,
    John

John , I presume you have a blender , just go to your local market get a good mix of fruit & veg & make your own , I recommend you get Celery & Cucumber as two of the items required .

You cannot do a juice cleanse with a “blender”. That’s for doing smoothies. Whole fruits.

Richard : Plz excuse my ignorance . I have been under the impression that blender & juicer were one & the same . How do they differ price-wise. Also people may like to know blenders make lovely soups . Cabbage ,lentils ,spuds ,carrots, mushy-peas onions, garlic & spices to suit absolutely scrumptious .

Have done a little research on juicers , in UK you can pay anything from £50 to £300 , also you can buy a gadget that does both blend & juice . Must check-out next time I am in central plaza Chiang Rai.

Neither of us have been sick since we started , it really does help to cleanse the system . I live in Chiang Saen but no probs. get all our fruits & veg from local market , I recommend the juice diet to everyone .

I only juice ginger root and drink a 3/4 spoonfuls with hot water. Settles stomach and a superior antacid, no need for Zantac and the like.

Any nutritional info about the contents in the bottles? Considering that just four apples or oranges contains carbohydrates enough to be equivalent to 22 sugar cubes it might be a not so healthy option after all. If I would detox the sugars would probably be the #1 thing I’d look out for.

Nothing wrong with nature’s sugar! after all the body runs on simple sugars. Some of the healthiest people eat natural sugar from fruits. Also no offence you don’t look like someone I’d take nutritional advice from.
