New Skytrains arrive for the Silom Line

Some good news for commuters on the Silom Line of the skytrain network in Bangkok. Five new trains from China have just arrived at the port in Chonburi. There is a total of 20 carriages so this will make them four-car trains. What happened last time, some of the five-car trains were then moved to the Sukhumwit Line. Not sure yet if they will do this. According to the BTS, these five new trains will come into service on 5th December 2013 which is the King’s birthday. With the opening of the new stations on the Silom line beyond Wong Wian Yai, the skytrain network is now 36.25 km long with 34 stations. There are now 52 trains and 208 carriages. An average of 700,000 people use the skytrain every day.

In related news, the Platform Screen Doors will come into operation before the end of December 2013. These can be found at BTS Siam, BTS Sala Daeng, BTS Chong Nonsi, BTS Victory Monument, BTS Phaya Thai, BTS Chidlom, BTS Asok, BTS Phrm Phong and BTS On Nut. There are also plans to increase the number of Skywalks into buildings at more of the stations for the convenience of passengers.
