In an effort to solve traffic problems in Bangkok, police say that from 21 October they will no longer wheel clamp cars but will tow them away instead. According to an article in the Bangkok Post, tow trucks will patrol ten routes in Bangkok during rush hour and will immediately tow away any illegally parked cars.

The 10 streets include Lat Phrao Road from Lat Phrao intersection to Lam Sali intersection, Rama IV Road from Hua Lamphong intersection to its intersection with Sukhumvit Road, Ratchadaphisek Road, Phahon Yothin Road, Vibhavadi Rangsit Road from Din Daeng intersection to Rangsit area, Sathon Road, Phetchaburi Road, Ramkhamhaeng Road, Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok and Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

From 21 October, the fine for illegally parking on these roads will be 500 Baht, plus 500 Baht for towing fee and 200 Baht per day the vehicle is at the car pound.

Not only would this concept help with the traffic problems, it would be a good, honest means of income.

In Southern California, there are certain areas that prohibit parking during rush hour. As rush hour approaches, there is an armada of tow trucks waiting to drag off the violators. Towing and impound is a big money maker!

I like the graphic – the car being towed is exactly what it’ll look like, apart from the smoke coming off the rears tires, of course.

I would have thought that was more money to be made in clamping first

Well of course not if the illegal parked car is a BMW, Mercedes or Ferrari.
