Bangkok Farmers’ Market to become a weekly event

The second Bangkok Farmers’ Market took place today at K Village on Sukhumwit Soi 26. The event was well attended by organic and health food vendors as well as by the general public. It was particularly great to see such a large interest in this event among the expats in Bangkok. It really felt like a community event as everyone was so friendly.

There were about 60 vendors at the event selling everything from organic produce to health food. There was also home baked bread, vegan and vegetarian food, honey, herbs and a large variety of fruit and vegetables. The vendors at each event won’t be the same as the organizers say that there is a pool of 300 vendors that they pick from for each event.

The first Farmers’ Market was back in March at Four Points by Sheraton on Sukhumwit Soi 15. As I said before, this was the second event. I spoke with one of the organizers this afternoon and he told me that they are now planning on holding a Farmers’ Market every Saturday in Bangkok. If this goes to plan, this will start in early June and will take place at a different venue each week.

For the latest information you can follow them on their Facebook page. As soon as I hear a confirmed date (at the moment I believe it will be Saturday 8th June at Four Points) I will tweet about it on @RichardBarrow and also blog here on www.RichardBarrow.com. I have posted over 100 pictures from today’s event on my Facebook page here.

These photos are awesome! I have to say that I’m a bit saddened by how much plastic packaging is used, especially for the organic vegetables. I think the term ‘organic’ should extend itself to environmental sustainability and responsibility, especially from the production side.

      Dear Giada,

We completely agree about the plastic bags. During the first Bangkok Farmers Market in March we passed out BKKFM reusable bags to sell but not all the vendors wanted to do so. We are working on it and plan to have no plastic bags in future events. We have been working with the vendors and farmers in regards to the plastic used for packaging since the first BKKFM event. You will see a progressive change of less plastic used at future BKKFM events. Ozone (fertilizer vendor) changed there packaging from plastic to cloth after speaking with them before the K Village event on the 25th this last May which was awesome. We have been meeting with existing and potential vendors to becoming green as possible. Just know that we are aware and working towards a greener market. We also organize and provide free community classes, prepare and serve organic food to children and families who are without in Bangkok, and try to fill a need. We have many other projects we are currently working on to execute before year end focusing on education, community, and our plant. Thank you Giada for coming to the Bangkok Farmers Market and supporting our local farmers, vendors, and community.

      Our Best,

      Bangkok Farmers Market Team
