Have Songkran Waterfights Really Changed that Much?

Every year people always talk about how bad it is getting during Songkran. Expats say they always stock up with DVDs and food in advance and then lock themselves in at home. This year the government has banned people playing waterfights on the back of pick-up trucks. But, judging by this old picture, people have been celebrating Songkran like this for many years. Why change now?

How many motorcyclists were badly injured or killed over the last five years due to being sprayed with coloured water by people in Utes on the freeway?

acording to my wife, there was a meeting today, and they got rid of the pickuptruck ban.
you can now again engage in waterfights from the back of pickup trucks, but you can’t drink alcohol while in the back of the car
    this i can live with.
although i think they should have said that you can’t be drunk in the back of the car instead of you can’t drink.
in theory i could drinka bottle of whisky before getting in the car, and be so drunk i am likely to fall out, and that is no problem, but i cant be sober and enjoy a beer
