On Wednesday morning, His Majesty The King made a rare public appearance on the balcony of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall in the Royal Plaza. Countless thousands of Thais lined the route from Siriraj Hospital to the throne hall with another 200,000 in the Royal Plaza. Millions of others watched live on Thai TV and also followed along on social media such as Facebook and Twitter. According to ThaiTrend, the tag that trended in Thailand on the King’s birthday was:
#WeLoveKingThailand (103,607 tweets). Others included: #ทรงพระเจริญ (41,497), #WeLoveKing (26,987), #longlivetheking (24,649), #WeLoveKingOfThaiLand (8,565) and #WeLoveTheKing (8,025)
It is a shame that there was no agreement on one hashtag. If they don’t do this then there will never be a chance to trend on worldwide twitter.
According to ThaiTrend, people started to tweet at a faster rate than the average daily from about 9:07 a.m. (2,008 tweets/minute) until it peaked at 11:20 a.m. (6,411/minute). You can just see a small drop at 11:04 a.m. (4,445/minute) which is when HM The King was making his speech. The peak came after the royal family had appeared on the balcony and we were waiting for the King to leave the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall. People were obviously using this pause to send out tweets. Although the tweet rate per minute wasn’t as high as other recent events in Thailand, the number of tweets in one day in the Thai language at 4,204,086 was a recent record.
The following are my own tweets in order of number of re-tweets. The first one has had over 450 retweets so far.
