Crazy Weather in Bangkok Today

The big storm that everyone has been talking about for the last week finally hit Bangkok today. However, even though we had some heavy rain overnight and during this morning’s rush hour, there weren’t any reports of major flooding. As it turned out, the storm wasn’t as bad as some other storms we’ve had in recent weeks. Bangkok’s drains seem to cope very well today. It was actually a crazy weather day as it kept switching between heavy rain and sunny blue sky and then back again. I think south of Bangkok was hit harder than us thogh nothing too serious. according to the weather forecast, this will continue for a few more days. They reckon by Wednesday that it will be back to normal. Which I presume means it will only rain at the start and end of each day.

I am still getting questions from people asking whether it will flood in Bangkok this year. What they need to understand is that it ALWAYS floods in Bangkok during the rainy season. This is either from run-off from up north (which usually arrives in October) or from very heavy rain which quickly fills up the sewers. Last year we had a combination of both. This year, there isn’t too much of a run off heading towards us. Plus, even though we have had some big storms this season, still not as many as last year. So, to answer that question, yes it will flood but it will go down a few hours after it stops raining. In the case of today, the drains coped very well and there wasn’t much flooding. Although you might get a bit wet if you come to Bangkok this month, there is no reason to cancel your holiday.

They have had some awful flooding in pattaya over the last 3-4 days. Phuket has had really nice last week or so.
So basically Thailand is a big place with huge weather changes, so just a chance you take in Rainy season.
