Thais drink 2.69 billion litres of alcohol beverages a year

Thais drink only 14.19 litres of milk per head each year compared to 44 litres of alcohol. This is according to figures released by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation as part of a campaign to encourage people to quit alcohol for more healthier alternatives. At the moment, Thais drink milk at a rate far below the average for South East Asians countries which stands at 60 litres of milk per head per year. What is worrying is that Thais drink a combined 2.69 billion litres of alcohol beverages a year. Understandably, the Thai government is trying to reverse this trend. Do you think they will have any success?

Yes, unfortunately for adult Thai men drinking milk is associated with being a weakling, but drinking alcohol is seen as a measure of being macho. That’s hard to reverse, I think. Values on what makes a real man should change first.

Whenever I’ve drunk milk in Thailand I’ve been asked “are you a baby?”

Not a chance, I’ve only ever seen Thai’s drink milk on one occasion.

At schools it is compulsory and has been for some years. But not sure if they continue until adulthood. Doubtful.
