The new Rabbit Card to Combine both the BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway

The hot topic on social media this last week is the news of a new combined ticket for the BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway. Rabbit will be available on 23rd April for those who have a 30-day BTS pass and wish to exchange it for a new Rabbit card.  For everyone else, Rabbit will be available on 1st May. Rabbit can be obtained by exchanging existing BTS cards – a 50 baht refundable deposit will be required.  If someone wants Rabbit and does not have a BTS card to exchange, that person would need to pay a 50 baht issuing fee and 50 baht refundable deposit.

Rabbit can be used for travel and passes on the BTS as well for making purchases at approximately 12 retail chains (such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, etc).  Rabbit is expected to be available for use on MRT by end of 2012.  The system is currently being implemented on that network. Rabbit holders who enroll in Carrot Rewards after May 1 can earn “Carrot Points” when they “top up” their Rabbit and when they travel on BTS.  Other retail partners, such as McDonald’s offer Carrot Points and other benefits.

I would hope they give the deposits back. At the moment, you don’t need a Rabbit Card unless you are using the new extension. For the rest, you can wait until the MRT come on board.

From what I understand, you have to change all cards eventually.

It’s pending approval from BMCL board. What happens if they don’t approve?
