Do it Yourself “Big Cup” of Pepsi for only 23 Baht

During this hot weather in Bangkok at the moment, a cool refreshing drinking is the order of the day. Here is a tip posted on twitter on how to make your own “Big Cup”. First buy a bag of ice at 7-Eleven for 7 Baht. Then a bottle of Pepsi for 16 Baht. Pour this into the bag of ice and you have yourself a “Big Cup” for only 23 Baht. Do you have any more tips for keeping cool?

The Biggest Chicken on Rice Dish in Bangkok

How hungry are you? Do you think you can eat this gigantic plate of “khao man gai” which contains two kilos of rice and one kilo of chicken? If you can do this by yourself within one hour then the owners of Sri Leung Pochana say that you don’t have to pay anything. If you fail, then the price is 500 Baht. The normal sized plate is 40 Baht, followed by Special at 50 Baht, Jumbo at 100 Baht and Giant at 500 Baht. According to their Facebook page, they also sell jumbo-sized bowls of noodles. The shop is…

Thai Monk Caught with his Pants Down

The Thai media seem to love it when they can catch a monk in a compromising situation. Either being drunk or eating at a restaurant with a woman. But this one posted today on YouTube is a classic “caught in the act” for this Thai monk from a temple in Khon Kaen. Monks are not allowed to be alone with women but this one was caught by police alone in a hotel room with a 21 year old prostitute. Apparently he paid her 400 Baht (US$13.40) to sleep with her. It feels like almost every day now that there is…

7,836 Thai kids killed in Road Accidents 2000-2011

With the start of the new school year in Thailand, the focus is back again on student safety. One area that is a cause of concern is the journey to and from school. Many students arrive at school by motorcycle with their parents or a motorcycle taxi driver. Unfortunately,  although the adults are wearing helmets, not so many of the children are protected. According to the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Center’s records, 7,836 children under 15 years old were killed in road accidents during 2000 – 2011. This is an average of 653 child per year. Many of…

Countdown to Demolition of Saphan Taksin Station

It’s looking like BTS Saphan Taksin won’t be receiving a last minute reprieve after all. The countdown is now on for its demolition in order to make room for two tracks over Taksin Bridge. This station has been useful for people wanting to transfer to the river boats and nearby hotels and condominiums. Now they will have to exit from BTS Surasak and then take a travelator along a 711 meter long skywalk to the river. The construction of the skywalk and the demolition of Saphan Taksin station is expected to start in July 2013 and will take about 21 months…

When is a Tourist Office not a Tourist Office?

When it comes to the public image of the tourism industry in Thailand, you would think that anyone working in that sector would do their best to leave a good impression with tourists. After all, it is their future. No tourists coming to Thailand means no more work for them. So, imagine the surprise of Kevin Parratt when he was treated like this at a “Tourist Information” office at Hua Lamphong train station. According to a post on his Facebook page (see here), he was in Bangkok recently to meet some friends and wanted to to get a map for…

How I lost 15 Kilos Juicing in Thailand

Over the new year, I made a resolution to make some big changes about my life. I’m not the kind of person who usually gets ill and I cannot remember the last time I had a day off work. But last year was a wake-up for me as many times I suffered from flu-like symptoms and other aches and pains. I was also overweight and I knew there is something that I needed to do before it was too late. The big change for me was starting to juice (see my original blog Tips for Juicing in Thailand). I bought a Philips centrifugal juicer…

Everything that is wrong with traffic in Bangkok

This is a classic picture which is being widely shared on Facebook at the moment. It clearly shows what is wrong with traffic in Bangkok. This looks like the road in front of Chatuchak where passenger vans & taxis compete with buses to pick up passengers. Although buses and other big vehicles are not allowed in the right hand lane, you can see them using it to overtake other vehicles and then cut in front of them to stop to pick up passengers. Some don’t even go to the far left lane before stopping to drop off or pick up…

Thai Pandas get a new $1 Million Price Tag

Thailand has just brokered a deal with China that will allow Ling Ping, the celebrity panda born in Thailand, to stay. Under the agreement, she will first return to China in October to find a mate and then they will both return to Thailand within a year. The 10-year contract for her parents, Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, is due to expire this October but the Chinese government has agreed to extend their stay while Lin Ping is away. Good news for panda lovers but bad news for us tax payers. China had been charging US$250,000 per year for each…

Another highlight of the past year is the Chinese film “Lost In Thailand”, written and directed by Xu Zheng. New Bicycle-Friendly Manhole Covers for Bangkok

If you have ever ridden road bikes with narrow wheels on the streets of Bangkok then you have probably noticed those sewer grates which can cause a serious accident. You probably wondered that if only they had put them in the other way so that you could ride over them safely without getting your wheels caught. After receiving many complaints from the cycling community, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) identified 1,203 manhole covers on 57 roads that needed to be replaced. According to a press release, they have so far replaced 999 covers on 50 roads so far. Some more good…

Fares to go Down on Skytrain Extensions

Some good news for people who live on the skytrain extension from On Nut to Bearing on the Sukhumwit Line. Bangkok City Hall said that from 17 May 2013 they will slash the price from 15 baht to only 10 Baht. It doesn’t matter how many stations you pass through on the extension as 10 Baht is the fixed fee. Fares on the Thonburi to Bang Wa extension on the Silom Line will also be reduced to 10 Baht from 5th December 2013. For the rest of the line, which is operated by Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc (BTS), fares will go up by…

The Hoops we Jump Through to Renew Visas

It’s not always easy living in Thailand as Immigration keep a strict eye on visitors. For tourists it is not so bad as there are generally here only a short time. But, if you are working here then there are many hoops that you have to jump through in order to satisfy the requirements for Immigration. You would think that once you marry a Thai person that your troubles are over. But, these renewals can be just as arduous. In fact, some of their requests can be downright weird. Take this picture sent in by Jonny Votek. He said he was…

Movies usually come and go very quickly at Thai cinemas. Not so for Pee Mak Phra Khanong, the most successful movie ever in Thailand. It was released on 28th March and is still doing well at the cinema. Facebook App for Watching Thai TV for Free

I often get emails from people asking how they can watch Thai TV on the Internet. There are quite a few websites that give you this service, but as I know many people use Facebook I thought I would point out this new app. It is called KirzTV and you can install onto your Facebook page by clicking on the link. While installing it asks permission to access your data and also to post onto your page. If you don’t like this kind of thing, then just change the setting so that only you see the posts. BMA to Demolish BTS Saphan Taksin Station

One of the strangest of the stations on the Skytrain network is surely the one at Saphan Taksin. Unlike other stations, this one has only one platform. To know which direction the train is going you have to listen carefully to the announcement. Only having one track across the bridge causes a bit of a bottleneck. This is only going to get worse as more stations open further down the line. Apparently this station was always intended to be temporary. I guess they thought not many people would use it. But it has turned out to be invaluable to workers…
