This is a famous historical movie based on a historical novel about life in ancient Rome. Unfortunately, historical truth is violated many times in this movie.

One example: in the movie we see the men who pull the oars of a Roman warship. They are slaves who are chained to their seats below deck.

In the real Roman world things were rather different. The men who pulled the oars of a Roman warship were free and not chained to their seats!

The most famous scene in this movie involves a dramatic horse race in a hippodrome which is known as a Roman circus.

Almost everything that is shown in this long scene is historically false.

You may like and enjoy this movie, but you should know that it has little or no connection to historical reality in the Roman empire.
