Doing a Lifestyle Juice Cleanse in Bangkok

veggies

Two years have now passed since I bought my first juicer and started paying more attention to my health. If anything, juicing for me has made me more aware of the food that I eat. I often stop and ask myself, does this food have any health benefits for me. Since I started juicing regularly I have never had the flu or any other serious ailment. I wrote in an earlier blog (see here), that before I started juicing I was eating a lot of street food. Although I love Thai food, there wasn’t much in the way of vegetables and fruit in my diet. And there was probably also more MSG than was healthy for me. I still eat Thai street food, but just not so often. My first meal of the day is a vegetable juice. Mid-day is usually a vegetable dish with no meat if I am cooking for myself. And then the evening meal is anything I fancy. In between, I have guava juice which I believe has been instrumental in keeping the flu away for the past two years.

About three times a year I do what is sometimes called a “juice detox”, though I prefer to call it a “reboot” of your body. Look at it like your desktop computer. After a while it starts to slow down and it takes forever to open programs. A simple solution is to reboot the computer. A juice detox involves drinking vegetable and fruit juices for seven days in place of solid foods. This gives your digestive system a welcome break and your body quick access to needed nutrients. The average length of a reboot is about seven days though I usually aim for ten days. The first 3-4 days are the hardest when you go through withdrawal symptoms. But once you are over the hump you will have so much more energy. I used to drink numerous cups of coffee during the day to keep me alert. After the reboot I no longer need a coffee, nor do I have cravings for things like chocolate and ice cream.

After the excesses of the new year holiday, I decided it would be prudent to do another 7-10 day juice detox. In fact, the whole festive season, starting with Thanksgiving and then the Christmas parties in December, saw me putting on weight. Although I think I’m still at an acceptable weight, I would like to lose about 5 kiols. I also want to try and flush my recent cravings for coffee and chocolate. I was about to start my own juice detox like I have done in the past, but then I was contacted by Lifestyle Juicery in Bangkok. They had read my blogs on Juicing in Thailand and wanted to offer me a juice cleanse. I had seen them before at the Bangkok Farmers’ Market. But as they are expensive, and because I have my own juicers, I didn’t really pay much attention. But I was definitely curious. I wanted to compare how they did it with my own methods and recipes. So, I signed up with them. I will be doing a ten day juice cleanse with day one being Monday 5th January 2015.

My first batch of juices arrived last night, see picture above. There are basically six bottles per day and you get two day’s worth with each delivery. I will write again about this lifestyle cleanse at the end of the course, but today I just wanted to write down some first thoughts on what I have seen so far.

Doing a Juice Detox Yourself

  • If you want to do a proper juice detox yourself, you need to buy a slow juicer. These cost about 10,000 Baht. I do have a cheaper and faster juicer that I sometimes use, but they generate heat which kills off the nutrients. And you must drink them straight away.
  • Doing a juice detox for 10 days involves a lot of time and energy. Not only in going to buy the fruit and vegetables, but also preparing them, juicing them and then clearing up the work station. And it’s not cheap, you only get a couple of glasses of juice from two kilos of carrots.
  • When I do a juice detox, I quite often have the same juices for each meal. This is because I make a big batch which is the most economical. This then has to be drunk with 48 hours.

Advantage of using a company like Lifestyle Juice Cleanse

  • With Lifestyle Juice Cleanse you get six bottles with six different recipes. Which means you get the variety you need during the day.
  • You don’t have to think about recipes for your juices or decide what makes a good balanced diet.
  • The company does all the hard work for you so that you just concentrate on your detox. They do the shopping, the juicing and the clearing up for you. They even deliver straight to your door every two days.
  • If you are not sure if juicing is for you, you can try their shorter juice cleansing programs. This is also a bit like “try before you buy”. You don’t want to buy an expensive slow juicer only to later find out this is not for you.

I am now coming to the end of my first full day. I’m doing good so far and not hungry at all. In fact, I am having trouble drinking all six bottles as I haven’t always been hungry. A good tip if you are feeling hungry is to drink plenty of water. And I certainly do in one day. At least two litres whether I am thirsty or not. I’ll do a proper round-up after the ten days have finished. Please note, this is expensive and it is not for everyone.  The point of this blog and the one to follow is just to show you what they have to offer. At the end of the day it is up to you whether you think it is value for money.

If you have used Lifestyle Juicery before can you please post your views on their service in the comments below. Or let us know if you have used any other companies like this in Bangkok. If you are not interested in juicing or don’t have anything constructive to add then please don’t post.

They do not appear to have a retail location – would be nice to visit a location and try one or two before going head first into the program

      Hello Mike,

We don’t actually have our own retail location, but you can find our juices at BaiMiang Healthy Shop. They have a store at Rain Hill mall, which is on Sukhumvit 47.

Alternatively, as Richard states, we’re at the BKKFM which is held at K-Village. If you can’t make it down this weekend we’ll also be at the BKKFM event at Ekkamai Gateway which is on the weekend of the 17th and 18th.

Feel free to call us if you have any questions on 093-364-0801. We look forward to seeing you at the farmer’s market 🙂

I must admit to trying out a full months fruit / veg juicing regime purely trying to try and boost my lack of energy feeling, I certainly felt the benefits and now have regular intermittent juicing sessions , detoxing never crossed my mind .

    Kind Regards – Indrid

Hi Indrid, yes indeed there are as many opinions about juicing, many refer to fruit
Juices but some also are not pro veggie juices… Even the well respected Guardian has many articles in addition to the one you refer to which are not negative like this one, please see http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/sep/18/green-juice-drink-health

I sell juice programs and do so for 1,5 year now, all i can say is that whatever the theories of what is better i so believe juice programs have there merits and serve a genuine purpose. We have many returning customers who feel great when they do a juice program, this must mean something i guess.

Thanks Richard, a nice article and thanks for promoting juice programs in general. It is as you say a great way to achieve a lot.

Next time try an organic juice program as to put it simply you can’t detox using toxins and in addition organic simply tastes better.

Would be glad to make you experience the difference when you’re ready to do so. Pura is located on Phuket but has active customers in Bangkok and we simply ship to Don Muang or Suvurnhabumi Airport every other day.

Or next time you’re in Phuket, pass by at Pura Organice Foods Ltd in Cherngtalay and try juices also. There’s plenty to read about it on our website http://www.puraorganic.org

Price indication for a 5 day Juiceprogram 4,900 THB, 7 days 6,800 THB.

As we are an organic food distribution company we have access to many organic farmers directly and can keep our prices competitive.

Let me know if you’re interested….

    Healthy regards,

Thanks, let me know if you have any questions. The popularity of juice bars in the western world is taking on considerable proportions and as good as all are organic juice programs only. Lot of investment funds going into these start ups, quite a market. (am still waiting for a hedge fund to give me a call though…..)
