On the Bike Train to Ayutthaya

Today I had the pleasure of joining the first dedicated Bike Train in Thailand. This is not a regular service yet. Today was partly a celebration of 117 years of the State Railway of Thailand. But it was also an opportunity to see how cyclists felt about having special cycling trips around Thailand by train.

It’s not regular. You have to book it with a group of friends.

Wow, that is very exciting. I traveled with bike to Ayutthaya about 12 years ago on my first time in Thailand to start a six month bike trip. It was a confusing process and I had to put the bicycle somewhere with cargo, and was happy and relieved when reunited with it at destination.

So bicycling is getting big in Thailand? Are there clubs that do weekly rides around Bangkok?

Yes, it is very big now and many clubs around Thailand. Just google “bicycle thailand” for more information. I also blog here whenever anything big happens like this.

Thanks for the detailed report! How did you transport your bicycle to the train station at Hua Lamphong?

I went on the skytrain (you can do this for free) and then cycled the short distance from BTS National Stadium. If you have a foilding bike, you can go all the way to Hua Lampong on the subway.
