Steam Train Trip to Ayutthaya on 23rd October 2013

IMG_8884

The annual steam train trip for Chulalongkorn Day will take place on Wednesday 23rd October 2013. Steam enthusiasts from all around the country will be gathering at Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok next Wednesday. Tickets for the roundtrip to Ayutthaya are 222 Baht per person. This includes snacks. Tickets for the 500 available seats go fast. Even if there aren’t any tickets left, it’s worth going to the station just to watch the steam train in action. It’s great going on one of these train trips, but I think even better to either watch as it leaves or arrives at a station. When you sit in one of the carriages you don’t see so much. The next steam train trip will be on the King’s Birthday which is 5th December 2013, followed by 26th March 2014 and 12th August 2014.

UPDATE: Tickets have now all sold out for this steam train trip. However, there is no reason why you cannot go and take pictures from one of the stations that it will pass or somewhere along the route. Next steam train trip is scheduled for 5th December 2013.

UPDATED: Timetable for Trip

The train is due to leave Hua Lamphong station at 8 a.m. There is no reason why you cannot go there early in the morning at say 7:30 a.m. to take pictures first. Alternatively, you can wait at one of the other stations in Bangkok. For example Samsen Station (8:17 a.m. – 8:19 a.m.), Bang Sue Station (8:29 a.m. – 8:31 a.m.), Bang Khen Station (8:43 a.m. – 8:44 a.m.), Laksi Station (8:54 a.m. – 8:55 a.m.), Don Mueang Station (9:05 a.m. – 9:06 a.m.) and Ayutthaya (10:30 a.m.).

The train will do the return trip at 5 p.m. and expected to arrive at Hua Lamphong at 7:30 p.m.  Don Mueang Station (6:24 p.m.), Laksi Station (6:35 p.m.), Bang Khen Station (6:46 p.m.), Bang Sue Station (6:59 p.m.),  Samsen Station (7:11 p.m.) and Hua Lamphong (7:30 p.m.). All times are of course subject to change and are based on previous trips. I took the top picture at Hua Lamphong and the above picture at Bang Sue.

This might be a silly question but how do I get tickets to the next train ride in December? Do I arrive early and wait in a line or is there a way to preorder? Thanks!!

You need to visit the ticket office at Hua Lamphong as soon as they go on sale. This time, tickets sold out a week before the trip.

I would love to go on that train. I would love to go on ANY train. But as I live in Phuket and we are held hostage by the bus and plane ‘mafia’, I don’t think I’ll see a train again in my lifetime.

Here’s a competition for your readers, Richard: which countries have a major popular international tourist destination that is reachable from the capital by road and air, but not by train?

    Other than Thailand, of course.

Talk about over-dramatic. It’s not clear whether you’re Thai or not, but either way – much as I agree the transport situation in Phuket should be improved, if you really hate it that much where you live then move, either somewhere else in Thailand or to another country altogether.
