Progress of New Rail Lines in Bangkok

It has been a long time coming but we are finally getting extensions to the skytrain and metro in Bangkok. I counted at least three new lines in progress at the moment with many more at various stages of planning. The line that is the closest to being finished is the Purple Line. The above photograph of a station opposite Soi 22 Ratanatibeth was taken today by Gordon Anderson.

  • Purple Line: Bang Sue to Bang Yai (23 km) – 47% finished. Due to open in 2016.
  • Blue Line: Bang Sue to Bang Khae (27 km) – 21% finished. Due to open in 2017.
  • Dark Green Line: Bearing to Samut Prakan (12.8 km) 10% finished. Due to open in 2016.

These dates are of course subject to change. I’ve started on a map marking the planned stations. You can see it here. I recently added the Yellow Line which goes from Lad Phrao to Samrong via Srinakarin Road. This is due to start construction in 2015 with a finish date four years later.
