Andy Murray has pulled out of the Thailand Open at the last minute

Thailand’s premier annual sporting event, the Thailand Open enters its eleventh year. It is due to start tomorrow and run until 29 September 2013. The tournament has played host to some of the biggest names in men’s tennis. Newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Andy Murray was supposed to lead three of the world’s top 10 tennis players at the Thailand Open 2013. However, Andy’s management has just announced that he won’t be playing in Thailand after all. Here is a brief statement on the Thailand Open official website:

The Thailand Open regrets to announce that Andy Murray has withdrawn from this year’s tournament. Andy’s management has informed us that he will be undergoing a surgical procedure this coming week, and they will be issuing a full press release shortly. We wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to the Thailand Open in the coming years.

No news yet as to whether people who have booked tickets can ask for a refund. Obviously fans will be disappointed, but Andy’s health must come first. I will update this blog as soon as the official press release comes out and any statement from ThaiTicketMajor on refunds.

Perhaps the players should deposit a financial bond with the organisers when they “sign up” for these tournaments.

Ha, ha! Yeah, I know – like that’ll ever happen.

Zero chance of a refund if you buy tickets for the tournament

About 4 or 5 years ago, there was a glut of players who were entered for the Tournament in Bangkok and couldn’t show up. The Management offered to refund payments in recognition of disappointment. I think even Nadal was originally committed to play and pulled out.
What the policy is for a single player not showing or the current policy for refunds, I wouldn’t know.
