120th Anniversary of Thai Naval Battle at Phra Chulachomklao Fort

120years

The commemoration of the 120th Anniversary of the Paknam Incident is taking place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July 2013 at Chulachomklao Fortress in Samut Prakan (see here). On 13th July 1893, a battle took place between two French gun ships and the Thai navy in Paknam. The French pilot ship was hit and ran aground but the two French gunships managed to evade the Siamese navy and successfully reached Bangkok. Click here for the full story. I don’t have the full schedule of events yet but I will update this blog as soon as I know anything for sure. Also follow me on @RichardBarrow as I will be attending the event.

I can recommend the book Et Aar i Siam (One Year in Siam) written by the Danish naval officer Walter Christmas, which gives a first hand description of the events. I don’t know if it’s available in English though, and his story doesn’t describe the Siamese war effort in a very kind way (Admiral Richelieu sued him for libel as a result).
