Which Thai Dish has More Calories?

If you had to choose at lunchtime one of these two dishes, which would you think is more healthy? The top dish is Khao Kha Moo (ข้าวขาหมู) which is pork leg on rice. The bottom dish is Khao Mun Gai (ข้าวมันไก่) which is boiled chicken on rice. I thought that the pork dish would be more fattening but I was wrong. This apparently only has 456 calories. This breaks down as 16.4 of fat and 55.5g of carbohydrates. In comparison, the chicken on rice is 600 calories (24.6 fat/74.5 carbohydrates). I guess it is the way they cook the rice in chicken stock. Probably better to have it on plain rice.

Great information – please do more of these! I struggle with food choices in Thailand, not understanding which are ‘slightly’ healthier options!

The best is to east plain rice with boiled chicken, but not all KAO MAN GAI sellers also have plain rice (they have it mainly if they also sell another kind of food).

Of course the rice soak in chicken oil is fatter than pork on plain rice if you do not eat too much KAO KAA MOO sauce.

I’m very surprised to find that out too! And that’s after I’ve had ‘khao mun gai’ for lunch on the basis that it does me good and keeps my cholesterol level down. In future, I’ll just have to walk a bit further to the next vendor to burn it off!
