How Not to Wear Monks’ Robes

It would seem that newspapers take any opportunity to show the state of affairs in Buddhism today. In particular with the antics of the monks. Recent front page stories have included monks selling drugs and monks having affairs with women. The Daily News had another one on their front page of these pictures of monks posted on Facebook. They are asking are these monks or models? From their poses, it is obvious that they are showing off their bodies. What do you think? Harmless fun or should they be setting a better example to society? Should we really care?

Ive been a resident of Thailand for many years, and its becoming a daily occurrence to see news articles on monks , or more specifically monks being caught committing criminal offenses ranging from shoplifting in a 7-11 , drug dealing , sexual offenses and lewd behavior . My Thai wife is getting so incensed by the constant news story’s that she has broken years of tradition and stopped giving any donations . It seems to some one like my self who stands on the outside of Thai Buddhism , that its once revered name and traditions are slowly being eroded away and in time the word monk will become synonymous with deceit and criminal behavior.

Ive lost count of the number of times ive been walking around an IT Mall and watched the herds of saffron robed monks pouring over the latest mobile phone or laptop computer . Some say that the monks are buying vast amounts of electronic gadgets to use for teaching purposes and keep in touch with the rest of the buddhist world, but sadly you only have to read articles like the above to see that in fact its not the case .

I know there the so called bad apples in every barrel , but its becoming plainly obvious where Thailand and its monks are concerned the cancerous rot is progressing at an alarming rate , when the current older generation of Thai has faded away , the respect and reverence they once steadfastly gave to monks will be only a distant memory .

Such an interesting post! I’ve never seen that photo before but it’s actually quite funny.
