Danger of Electrocution During Floods in Thailand

It goes without saying that electricity and water don’t mix. If you have been in Thailand any length of time, you have probably seen electrical cables all over the places. Sometimes when you use pedestrian bridges you have to duck underneath cables. Ones running across the ground are just as worrying. Particularly when they are partially covered in flood water. According to a report in The Nation newspaper this morning, 128 people were electrocuted during the floods last year. Bangkok claimed the top spot at 26 electrocutions. This was followed by Pathum Thani at 22, Nonthaburi at 20 and Ayutthaya at 14 deaths. But, it is not just floods you have to worry about. There has been cases of tourists walking down the road in Pattaya being electrocuted during a storm. And in Phuket, a guest at a hotel was electrocuted after he got out of the swimming pool. Sometimes there isn’t much you can do about it. But, if in doubt, stay away from any electrical wiring that is lying in the water.

Somebody once told me that its mostly cause people are tapping in illegally without the safety cut boxes so even in the water those cables are produce electricity. Is that true?
