Eco-Friendly Bangkok Hotel also wants to be Bike Friendly

In March of this year, I spent a Weekend at Bangkok Tree House. This is one of Bangkok’s latest eco-friendly hotels where they have pulled out all stops to be green. I think any other hotel that built in the middle of a jungle would have bulldozed the trees in order to build a paved road and a parking lot. Not so at Bangkok Tree House. The only way to reach this hotel is by boat or walking along a narrow elevated pathway. The best way to get arond this area is in fact by bicycle. And that is exactly how I arrived at this hotel for my short stay. That is why I was interested to read on Twitter this morning of their plans to make the hotel also “bike friendly”. Which is a great idea.

This is what they said on the @BangkokTree Twitter account:

“So many cyclists visit @bangkoktree house, I think it’s high time we make it Thailand’s 1st #bikefriendly hotel… some ideas: 1. Special discount 4 cyclists 2. Secure in-room bike storage 3. Packed lunch available 4. Free water filling & 5. Free bike cleaning.”

This whole area in Phra Pradaeng is very popular with cyclists, both local and foreign. This has inspired me to head off there again this weekend and do some more exploring. Follow me on Twitter @RichardBarrow to see my travels.

Never say never! I thought it too expensive until I visited there for lunch. It is amazing – a truly eco friendly resort with no greenwash. Sure, staying there is costly and would be for a special occassion but it is worth it. Anyway, if not to stay, do visit for lunch. I would love to see this place succeed. I love the glass viewing area in the (recycled wood from thai houses) floor so you can see the wetland ecosystem below, and the canals surrounding it that are part of the architecture but fit with the surrounding neighbour hood. This place is a GEM.

As someone that has cycled a lot in Thailand, I think this is a fine idea. Yet at the same time the hotel is so expensive that I would never stay there. A discount for riding a bike is nice, but I can stay in a lesser, but fine, hotel for 600 baht.

Looks amazing, the idea of getting to the hotel via boat or by walking across a bridge is very appealing. Especially if you’re staying in Bangkok, which most people associate with heavy traffic.
