Big Red Shirt Rally in Bangkok on Saturday 19 May 2012

This Saturday marks the 2nd anniversary of the bloody crackdown by the Thai army of red shirt protesters. An estimated crowd of 100,000 people are expected to rally at Ratchaprasong Intersection on 19th May 2012. Some will start gathering in the morning but the main rally is scheduled for the afternoon and is expected to last until after midnight. It is highly likely that Ratchadamri Road will be closed from Ratachaprasong Intersection to Pratunam Intersection. As people will probably park illegally on neighbouring roads, it would be best to avoid the whole area on Saturday if you don’t want to get caught up in a traffic jam. If you want to go to Central World then go to BTS Chitlom and use the skywalk to go straight into the mall. This will avoid the rally. Violence is not expected and tourists should be safe visiting local malls.  In addition to Ratchaprasong, there will also be a smaller rally at Lumpini Park near the statue of King Rama VI.

I will be in this area on Saturday and will be live tweeting updates on @RichardBarrow.

Thank you for your info Richard, even my Thai lecturer didn’t know about this when I asked her.
